March 1: Partnered Charleston

The Evolution of Charleston from the 1920s-1940s

From the cat’s meow to hep cat, we will explore one of the most popular dances of the 20th century. Twenties Charleston was born with the early beginnings of jazz music. We will learn to dance the original Charleston from the Roaring 20’s, and then explore the changes in styling as the music evolved from jazz to swing in the late 1920’s and 30’s. The latter “swing-era” Charleston, with its distinctive look and variations, is considered around the world to be one of the basic steps in Swing and Lindy Hop.
