November 16: Valse Cafe Orchestra

Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Valse Café Orchestra, a Seattle institution that got together in 1999 with a singular goal: to win the hearts of good dancers by playing post-modern renditions of dance-hall classics. This award-winning orchestra’s eclectic repertoire celebrates the best dance music of bygone eras and cultures: Paris in the thirties, Strauss’s Vienna, Yiddish melancholy, Gypsy romance, Broadway show tunes, Ragtime Manhattan, as well as dual genres of swing – from the sophisticated syncopations of Duke Ellington, to the hot Texas two-steps of Bob Wills.

Though it started out as a “waltz band,” the orchestra has evolved into a true variety band—filling its programs with just about every genre of dance music, including Foxtrots, Cha-chas, Swing classics, Polkas, Tangos, Rumbas, and Waltzes of all tempos. The late artistic director of Valse Café, Susan Balshor, stated, “We don’t just play great music exceptionally well. Our goal always is to create romantic evenings of fantasy and pleasure.”

This dance features the Valse Cafés “Big” orchestra, an eight-piece group that adds cello, trumpet, and vocalist to its usual mix. The additional instruments let Valse Café play a wider selection from its dancer-friendly repertoire.

As this is the start of the year-end holidays, you might enjoy wearing festive attire for this wonderful evening of dancing.  It’s not a “dance ball,” but gowns and tuxes will be admired.
